Meet Partner Meagan Moodie!

On Behalf of | May 28, 2019 | Firm News

This week, it is our pleasure to introduce you to one of our founding partners, Meagan Moodie! Meagan has made a name for herself as an advocate for victims of domestic violence and as a trailblazer for women in the law, as she was recently sworn in as a board member of the Colorado Women’s Bar Association. Meagan has also received the coveted award of “Rising Star” from Colorado Super Lawyers, an award given to only 2.5% of Colorado attorneys.

How long have you been an attorney?
This year will be 7 years.

Have you ever worked in other areas of the law?
Yes, I briefly worked in criminal, immigration, and personal injury law, but knew that they were not for me. Those experiences led me back to family law, where I am certain I belong.

What drew you to family law?
I interned in the family law division of Colorado Legal Services when I was at Regis University. The cases I handled while working there were interesting but difficult and often very sad. However, I was able to help victims of domestic violence during their toughest times, and it was incredibly rewarding. After law school, I wanted to try my hand at practicing in other areas, just to make sure I knew I was choosing the right area of practice. However, Family law just kept finding me, and I decided to dedicate my career to family law as soon as I opened my own law firm in 2014.

What do you enjoy most about family law?
I enjoy working closely with people as opposed to companies. I like that every day/week/month is different. Sometimes I am in the office for much of my week, and sometimes I am in court 3 or 4 days in a week. I enjoy my work as a Child & Family Investigator, because I like working with kids. I love helping victims of domestic violence obtain protection from their abusers. I like helping families get through the worst time of their lives, and hopefully landing in a healthy, happy, new place.

What do you think makes you stand out among other family law attorneys?
I think my experience in the area of domestic violence and protection order cases is unique. I have handled well over 100 protection order cases and counting, and have significant experience and training in issues surrounding domestic violence. Because these types of cases tend to require litigation, I am more comfortable in the Courtroom than most attorneys, even those who have been practicing for much longer.

Are you originally from Colorado? If so, what do you love most about it?
I am originally from Colorado. I went to school in Arvada and then eventually in Lakewood, so I’ve lived all over the Denver Metro area. I love the weather and proximity to the mountains, of course. My husband and I live on the Cherry Creek bike trail and often take rides/walk our dogs on the trail. I love that you can drive only a few hours and be in a completely different climate/landscape. I love that, even though the city is growing rapidly, it often still feels like a small community.

When you are not at GEM Family Law, what are you doing in your spare time?
Usually I am with my husband and our 2 rescue puppies, Bentley and Bailee. We love to camp, hike, and do anything we can to enjoy the amazing Denver sunshine. We have a lot of family that lives close by, so we are often at family gatherings on the weekends. We recently moved into a new home, so too much of our spare time is spent unpacking and tending to our new backyard/garden right now. Whenever we can, we travel. Craig is from Europe, so we try to spend our vacations there, so we can see his family & friends.

What is something interesting that people don’t know about you?
I don’t like chocolate, but I am not actually allergic. I just tell people that so they don’t ask me dozens of questions (“Are you SURE you don’t like it? When is the last time you tried it? Even white chocolate?!”) and/or tell me I’m crazy.
